SoP: Don’t exaggerate
There are many hurdles to cross in your quest for an admission to a top business school – in India or overseas. In addition to the admission test scores, almost all top colleges require applicants to present their statement of purpose (SOP). This can serve as another indicator of your eligibility . There is more significance to the essays if you are applying to schools abroad, for these essays also contribute to your eligibility for financial aid.
The essays are to be written as responses to the prompts, either as questions or as statements.
Whether you are a fresher or working professional, you have to present yourself favourably while writing these essays to improve your chances of admission to the college.
To prepare the SoP, a majority of applicants refer to standard formats which successful students have followed, or take assistance from advisors. Yet others keep these original — in content and language.
That many of these SoPs are ridden with exaggerations is a given.
The admission committee may not choose to ignore these. Hence caution has to be exercised.
Common exaggerations
Always wanted to start my own firm: Most applicants believe that this is a ‘preferred response’. While it is true that many a student dreams of ‘owning’ a company while they are still in college, it is important to see that your academic and non-academic credentials match the goal.
Was the best student/worker/ all-rounder: Avoid superlative words unless the fact is expressible in tangible forms. For example, it is different if you say ‘I was the best athlete in my school and I was awarded ‘the best athlete’ at school level or district level in event X for the year Y.
If you have been awarded for your painting in a contest, or for an essay in a writing competition (include statistics such as the number of contestants/ state-level/ school-level), you are an achiever in that specific field.
If you are already employed, even if multitasking is sometimes part of your work, portraying these as multiple roles is an overstatement.
Done projects independently
A small project or a short-term internship cannot amount to actual experience. Similarly the usage ‘extensive experience’ may not apply to you.
If you mention your contribution towards conducting an event in college, or a work project, make it look real and believable.
Give your peers and your guide their due credit for their contributions; let team projects be stated as a platform to present your team skills. Acknowledgements are real signs of leadership.
Took a meaningful break
A tendency to hide a gap is not welcome. If the gap is more than six months after college or during employment, you need to duly justify it.
Non-existent fillers may not be the best solution. However, there is no harm in underplaying or not mentioning any episode in your academic or work life that you had no control over (such as an affiliation problem with the college or ‘benching’ of a work offer.)
High on attributes
Desist from using generic traits, such as ‘creative’, ‘highly motivated’, ‘effective’, ‘innovative’, ‘responsible’, ‘analytical’ and ‘optimistic’. Such generic words can bemisleading. Everything you put in your essay should have a proof. If no specific data is attached these terms are not considered valid.
Have few weaknesses
All of us have shortcomings. Most colleges require you to write about your weakness in your SoP. You may be honest about these and spell out what you have initiated to get over them.
Have adequate management skills ‘I have all the skills to be accepted into your university. I always wanted to get into your prestigious school.’
You are seeking business education. With a few years of work experience behind you, you may have rudiments of managerial skills. But if you have been in a technical job, making such judgment is a hyperbole; let the business school groom you to be a management professional. Unless, there is a question on ‘where you see yourself X years from now, you need not mention your long-term aspirations.
Want to change society
If you have done volunteer work, enumerate them in clear, specific terms, not fabricated and ‘tailor-made’ for the application. If your goal is eventually to bring out change, be specific about the causes that you are concerned about.
A born leader
The school may ask you to mention early signs of leadership, if any. This does not mean that it is mandatory to project yourself as someone who is already a leader: you may be one in the making.
If you project yourself as this ‘well-rounded’ personality what more moulding can a business school do?
Let the SoP showcase your integrity, true skills and achievements and value system. Give hard data on your achievements; be subtle in your plan for the future — the clear plan will emerge as you progress in your MBA.
It’s not fair

It’s not fair
When it comes to getting a job, appearance is not the only factor. There is more that counts.
Mary was excited about her first job interview. She had just finished college and was looking forward to new challenges in the workplace, including a monthly paycheque. In the midst of all the excitement, she was suddenly plagued by self-doubt. She had always been ridiculed by family and friends about her dark complexion. Then there were advertisements that projected — girls who got the job and the boyfriends — were the ones who supposedly applied fairness creams. She decided to do the same.
Varun was in college and loved wearing branded clothes and shoes. He was popular and was always busy organising culturals, blood donation drives and theatre festivals. When he overheard a group of students talking, making insinuations that his popularity was because of his branded attire, he was shocked. He never saw himself as brand-obsessed. Moreover, the clothes were bought with his own pocket money which he made by working in an event management company during weekends.
Image and reality
All of us are living in a world bombarded by images and perceptions. Both, in print and visual media, we are constantly being told what to wear (or more likely, what not to wear!), how to walk, talk, what being successful means, and so on.
We are constantly judging ourselves and others against standards set by models and celebrities. How do we filter through all the messages we receive? How do we negotiate our own desires to look good with what is being prescribed by advertisements, and family and friends? We want to be accepted for who we are, yet we want to feel a sense of belonging to a particular group. Sometimes, this leads us to spend more than we can we afford or wear something which makes us feel uncomfortable.
“Do not judge a book by its cover”, might seem like a worn-out cliché. However, it really is the first step to addressing the issue. Clichés have often come through the wisdom of experience and it does not hurt to pause a moment and ponder over it. The first cover that we harshly judge is ourselves — we feel we are never good enough. Often this insecurity gets projected onto other people, so we end up avoiding them. Sometimes, it is interesting to listen to what people in the business are really saying.
Celebrity speak
Sonam Kapoor is a young actor and model who has been generating a lot of interest for her work in unusual films like Delhi 6 and Ranjanhaa. While the love for her work shines through, she cautions young people on blindly emulating celebrities. She reminds us that to make her look that good, there is an industry of people working behind the scenes — hairstylists, makeup artists and photo-shopped pictures that mask blemishes.
If you spend a few moments to think about the people you admire, most likely they would be people who are either trendsetters or those who are truly comfortable with themselves.
Perhaps it is just being aware of the gap between the image and reality. Read any biography of successful people (models included) and what comes through is that their journey has been based on principles of hard work, honesty and a passion to keep learning. Despite facing rejection or failure, they strived towards perfection in their chosen fields. A fair complexion does not make you a better pilot, singer or executive!
Life and lessons
When we approach life, knowing that every person has an interesting experience to share, it makes our lives richer as we connect with people beyond the image.
In the above story, when Varun casually shared his experiences of coming from a middle class family and that his clothes were bought with his income, many in the group were surprised. He even gave the group some tips on where they could buy branded clothes on sale and it is not surprising that his circle of friends has since widened. Instead of confronting their prejudices head-on, his honesty helped in bridging their resentments.
In Mary’s case, her learning came from a bitter experience. The fairness cream she used caused severe allergies and the dermatologist asked her to stop using it. It took a lot of painful soul searching to come to terms with what had happened. Currently, she is happy in her new job where her mentors have given her new responsibilities based on her unique abilities. None of it was based on her complexion.
At eighteen, while travelling on a train, I was seated next to a silver-haired elderly lady, wearing a traditional kanjeevram sari and a diamond nose stud .When she asked me about the book I was reading, I dismissively told her that she had probably not heard about the writer. She smiled politely and told me that she was the manager of a book store in Trichy and had read all his previous works. It was a humbling moment for me, and a rich experience as she shared her knowledge and passion for books.
By all means experiment with your sense of style — this is the time to let your creativity unleash. However, if you find yourself becoming obsessed by it or judging people for what they wear, it will be worthwhile to take a moment to introspect.
Go beyond the image and expand your horizon. Your world will become larger and in the truest sense… beautiful!

Looking to join a Course / Job Guarantee Program ? BEWARE !, Job Seekers & Freshers must read it...
Off the late, I have been witnessing many instances where job seekers (especially Freshers) are getting cheated by FAKE Consultancies and Companies. I don't want that to happen to you. With minimum care, you can avoid getting cheated. Most of you might be aware of these things but still many of you fall in trap by their convincing false claims. These guidelines might help someone who is new to industry or fresh out of college. Please forward this to every one of your friends and try to help at least few of them from getting cheated. --> ChetanaS
Thumb Rule # 1:
DON'T BELIEVE IN ANYONE WHO ASKS YOU TO PAY MONEY FOR OFFERING A JOB.
Companies don't need to take any money from you. They might tell you hundreds of stories like they are taking money as a 'Security Deposit' or for 'Infrastructure' purpose. Don't trust them. If they don't have enough money for their infrastructure, they don't deserve to run the company smile.gif
Instead, I advise you to trust a company who doesn't ask a penny from you even if it is a start-up company. You can work for FREE (or for a very less salary) if you want to get some work experience. That is Ok. But never pay money from your pocket for any reason. In worst-case scenario, if you are paying money, don't forget to take a signed paper (On their Company Notepad with the signature from an official) or a valid bank receipt from them in which it's clearly written that you have paid the money as a refundable security deposit and it should also have the Terms & Conditions.
Also, don't submit/handover your educational certificates (or any original documents) unless it is a very good company and its mandatory for all employees working there. If you are submitting the documents, make sure you get a written proof that they have taken them as per the policy of their organization. (F.Y.I., Good companies never insist their employees to handover originals to them. They generally ask you to bring them during joining period to cross check with the photocopies of the same.) If you blindly believe somebody's words without following the above guidelines then, you will be in serious trouble later when you want to leave the company. I know many freshers who suffered because of this. Hope you don't get into trouble.
Thumb Rule # 2:
DON'T BELIEVE IN ANY 'JOB GUARANTEE' PROGRAMS FROM TRAINING INSTITUTES. 99.0 % OF THEM DON'T KEEP UP THEIR PROMISES.
It has become a trend that many companies/institutes asking jobless people to pay 50,000 (or more) and they will pay you 2,000 per month. Just think logically how foolish it is. For 1 year, they will be paying you (2000X12=) 24,000. So, you are working FREE for them for more than 2 years. In other words, they will be giving you a part of the amount that you have paid to them initially. And they will be enjoying the interest on your money.
These institutes promise you a lot of things when you go for counseling. They will show their past record of placing people in MNC companies and they will tell you the list of companies that come there for the placement. Don't get deceived by them. All those promises will go in vain the moment you pay the money.
In the worst-case scenario, if you must join, then enquire with the students who are studying there and who already studied there. (You can know any regrets from those who are currently studying there and you will know the pros and cons from the people who already studied there. Try to get feedback from those who achieved the job and those who couldn't get the job after the completion of the course).
Unveiling the Secret :- From my experience, I can say that, typically some good training institutes could place those candidates who meet with the company's eligibility criteria such as the engineering branch/stream you have done and the percentage criteria through out the candidate's career. These institutes will lure freshers showing the past records and allows everybody to join the course initially but they keep mum on this issue until you demand the reason why they couldn't place YOU. Remember, even the good institutes are running on a profit basis and NOT on a service basis!
It's always good to get trained in some latest technologies and it improves your chance of getting a job. But don't join any institute based on their promise of giving you a job. When you want to join an institute, remember to enquire with the student who has taken the course and observe the infrastructure, lab availability timings, and the faculty. Some institutes train you using their previous batch students as faculty. Be careful. Preferably, join a branded institute as they maintain quality of education to some level. But generally they are expensive to afford as they try to maintain the quality. Remember? No institute is at your service ! Everything is business. You cannot change that, but you need to be careful.
Thumb Rule # 3:
KNOW THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN 'PLACEMENT ASSISTANCE' AND 'PLACEMENT GUARANTEE'.
There is a subtle difference between 'Placement Assistance' and 'Placement Guarantee'. The former one means that they will help you to get a job, but no guarantee. If you observe the advertisements carefully, most of them mention '100% Placement Assistance'. Later they can always escape saying that they never guaranteed a job. Even if they do, there will be a famous super star saying "* Conditions Apply !" :-). Ask them what those conditions are.
When some institute says 'Placement Guarantee', ask them to mention it in written and give it to you. (No body can dare to give you. They cleverly say that how can we assure you a job if you don't learn anything. Or they will ask you not to join the course if you don't have the trust on them and they can even say that, there are hundreds of candidates who are pursuing the course and they will slap a question back to you whether they are all fools to join that institute. What will be your reaction? ) See to it that it's clearly mentioned in that document WHAT IF they can't provide you a job. Also tell them that you will pay the money the next moment they provide you a job (Since they are anyway saying job is guaranteed, ask them what's the problem with this...:-)).
Some institutes say that they will recruit you based on your performance in training. This is even more fishy. They can always escape later saying your performance is not up to the mark (Despite of you performing very good) and walk away with your money. Be careful.
In the worst case, if you are paying money, see to it that you pay in installments. (At least, it will save you from losing your entire money). If their training is really good, you will anyway pay the remaining money. Otherwise, you can escape with the least damage. Hope you will keep in mind that I've asked you to join an institute mainly to learn the technology and not for their job guarantee scheme. So when you want to learn, join the best! It may even fetch you a job!
Thumb Rule # 4:
DON'T ATTEND THE WRITTEN TESTS/INTERVIEWS THAT ASK YOU TO PAY REGISTRATION FEE. 99.0 % OF THEM ARE FAKE.
An exception is the Government companies. They require some registration fee. That's OK. Remember that good/branded companies never ask you for registration fees. They don't need it. If they are taking money, there is something fishy. Don't pay registration fee unless you are totally convinced. Just walkout if you think something is fishy.
Thumb Rule # 5:
DON'T BELIEVE ANYONE WHO SAYS THEY CAN GET YOU THROUGH COMPANIES BY 'BACK-DOOR'.
People in the companies are not senseless to recruit candidates in illegal ways and put them and their own company in trouble. Don't believe if someone says he knows the HR or Project Manager of a company and can provide you job through back door. In the best case, one may get a job if the candidate directly knows high level people and he/she meets all the eligibility criteria of the company and the candidate is talented enough to get a job but he/she didn't get an opportunity to prove his/her ability. But remember, there is no bypass to the process of the company. Process is rigid and it is because of the process, a company grows or shrinks! It's better and happy to stay away from such back door offers instead of getting troubled by them. Think!
Thumb Rule # 6:
DON'T BELIEVE IN ANY OF THE 'ONLINE TYPING JOBS' OR 'SMART JOBS' THAT ASK YOU TO PAY SOME MONEY TO EARN MORE.
If they give it for free, then you may think about it. (But, I strictly discourage such jobs because you will lose your will to get into a good job that matches your profile.) Better, simply ignore. Don't pay even a single paisa. They lure you saying you have to pay 500 Rs (or more) initial payment to earn thousands of money every day ! All that is simply trash. You will be wasting your time and you won't earn even a single paisa after paying your/your parents' hard-earned money.
Thumb Rule # 7:
THINK TWICE BEFORE PAYING MONEY TO ANY OF THE JOB SITES.
Personally I don't believe in Premier Memberships, Online Tests that require you to pay money. I believe that's just eye wash stuff and will not fetch you any job if you don't have right talent. If you have talent, you will anyway get that job even without the help of those programs. Even if they send your resume to 1000 companies or 10,000 companies, the companies won't recruit you unless they have vacancies and you are suitable for those positions.
If someone says they succeeded through some job program, just think what is the percentage of people succeeded in getting jobs through that program. I don't think it will be more than 1 %. I am not saying all programs are fake ones. But my advice for you is to think twice before you spend your hard-earned money on some job programs. Remember that companies pay money for those job sites if you get selected through them. In such case, there is no need to collect money from you.
Cracking GATE

Cracking GATE:
From this year the country’s premier entrance examination, for admission into engineering PG courses, Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) is expected to go online. There are about 21 different streams under GATE and three streams such as civil, biotechnology and chemical have already gone online two years ago and this year (GATE-2014) all the remaining are scheduled to go online.
The paper for 2014 is being set by IIT-Kharagpur and they have called for tenders for migrating to the online format and that means that GATE will no longer be a paper-pen based test, said the Gate Academy Director Nitin Rakesh Prasad.
The examination window is scheduled to be open from February 1 to March 2 and for acclimatisation to the online format IIT-Kharagpur will be offering practice sessions between January 25 and 29.
In a chat with The Hindu Education Plus, the Director of Gate Academy, said the options for GATE are many and the examination is not confined to just admission into PG courses in premier institutes such as IITs, IISC and NITs.
“Over 18 public sector companies and major private sector giants from core sectors have set the GATE score as benchmark for their recruitment process.
And this apart, students interested in getting into MBA programme can join NITIE- Mumbai (National Institute of Industrial Engineering) for a management programme in industrial engineering,” he said.
He further added that students can take up fellowship programme in IIMs (Indian Institute of Management) with GATE score or join Ph.D programmes in IISC and IITs.
Elaborating on Ph.D programmes he said, “The Government in a bid to retain good talent pool had initiated this direct Ph.D programme a couple of years back. Students interested in doing research can directly enrol into Ph.D. programme after B. Tech with the GATE score. They even are paid stipend during the research period.”
On how to crack GATE, Nitin Prasad said, “There is only one mantra- get your basics right. The examination basically tests the depth of a student, it is conceptual in nature and hence one should be strong in his or her fundamentals. Follow more than one textbook for your subjects.”
Here are a few tips:
* Subjective preparation is important
* Strengthen your basic mathematics and engineering mathematics
* Spend time on fundamentals- read from more than one textbook
* Focus on study material and chalk out a plan earmarking what to study and what not to study. Adopt selective conceptual study pattern.
* Solve at least 10 years past question papers
* Practice and set your speed of solving papers
* Do not neglect all India level test series. Set them as benchmark.
