WHY IIT 'S BUT NOT OTHER'S

Posted by sarath On 9:51 AM

What makes the IITs different? Why is there a clamour for getting into these institutes of technology? Why do companies prefer to hire from IIT? Let’s find out!

he IITs produce world-class engineers through a curriculum which is rigorous. According to a documentary on CBS 60 minutes, less than two per cent of the exam-takers on an average get into the IITs, while 10 per cent of the exam-takers get into Harvard. Hence, the IIT JEE is considered to be one of world’s toughest exams. So, what is IIT? Why do students undergo such hardship to enter an IIT?
“IIT is a philosophy, not simply an educational programme,” says Padmashri Dr. M. Anandakrishnan, Chairman of IIT Kanpur. With a number of engineering colleges offering engineering education, the focus of the IITs was to bring a substantial amount of science and humanities content and create engineers of the future.

Pedagogy matters

The “teaching-learning process” at the IITs are fundamentally different from most other institutions. Here, the senior most professor is assigned to take classes for the junior most students — the first-year students.
This is to ensure that the senior most professors and icons of specific subjects are easily accessible to the beginner at IIT. This helps in building a healthy teacher-student interaction. Also “there is no finality of the syllabus” says Dr. Anandakrishan and goes on to explain that the faculty has the flexibility to deliver the latest, updated and dynamic content for the prescribed syllabus.
“IIT transforms life,” says Srinivasan Viswanathan, an IIT Madras and IIM Ahmedabad alumnus, executive director of TiE and member of the executive council of IIT-M Alumni Association. For him it was a great experience making it to IIT-M from small town Palayamcottai in the southern district of Tamil Nadu with schooling in the Tamil medium. His biggest takeaway from the IIT is the ecosystem that nurtures confidence, problem-solving and team building skills. “What we learnt outside the classroom was as important as what we learnt inside the classroom,” he says.
Vivek Khandewal, alumnus of IIT Bombay feels that the kind of people he met gave him an opportunity to look at things from various perspectives. The life of an IITian is what he or she makes of it. The campus provides numerous facilities and opportunities be it mountaineering, yoga, the 24-hour open tinkering lab, horse riding or music.
The emotional bondage between the students and the faculty is also strong, because at IIT, everyone lives within the campus — be it the student or the faculty.
Prof. Anandakrishnan feels that it is imperative that exposure be large, wide and deep. It is with this view that IITs go a long way in helping the students get into their dream companies, research labs and universities within or outside the country to do their projects. IITs have one of the best alumni networks which focus on nation-building efforts besides helping each other.
The IITs have an excellent track record of placements. Some of the world’s largest corporations and most of the Fortune 500 companies go after an IITian . Besides, most of Silicon Valley entrepreneurs are from the IITs. “Mindless cramming despite good scores and a seat at one of the IITs leaves the student totally unequipped to face the academic rigour of the IITs,” says Prof Anandakrishnan.
“Aspiring for an IIT education is not enough, it is extremely important to be committed to the academic achievements such as the scores and strike the right balance. If you succeed it is fine, if you don’t its still fine because there are so many more opportunities opening up,” says Visawanathan. “If you don’t make it at the undergraduate level, try getting into an IIT for the postgraduate courses,” says Prof Anandakrishnan.
The writing on the wall very clearly is ‘IIT is a big dream.’ And big dreams are built on strong fundamentals. After all, it is the attitude that decides the altitude.

Record : Over 17 lakh applied for SBI 1500 PO posts

Posted by sarath On 7:13 AM

State Bank of India has received a record 17 lakh applications for a mere 1,500 probationary officer positions the bank had advertised for. This is the highest response for bank officers' positions. In 2009, in the wake of the global crisis, the bank had received close to 36 lakh applications for 11,000 clerical positions.

"This time, we had given the advertisement a good profile, highlighting the position of SBI and describing the compensation package in detail, which attracted a lot of attention," said chairman Pratip Chaudhuri. He added that earlier the advertisements were like 'tender' advertisements, merely providing information about the job and eligibility criteria. One of the attractions of a probationary officer's job is the promise of official accommodation. In a city like Mumbai, the bank would provide rent allowance to the tune of Rs 31,000.

This results in the compensation for a Mumbai probationary officer amounting to Rs 69,000 a month higher than the starting package in some private banks. SBI does posses its own quarters but these are way below employee housing requirements.

"Candidates for entry level jobs are fungible — that is, the same type of candidate applies for jobs across sectors including telecom, insurance and other jobs in the service sector. This year, hiring by all others sectors is down, which might have resulted in a more candidates chasing banking jobs," said a senior official with a private bank.

The generous benefits offered by SBI has resulted in the bank drawing applications from a wide spectrum of candidates, including those working for other banks. The bank factors in 10-15% attrition during the years because often successful candidates do not get a posting close to home or of their preference.

The bank has decided to interview all the 17 lakh candidates in a competitive examination. "We have conducted such examinations in the past by hiring schools across the country. This time, we may have to do two shifts," said Chaudhuri. Candidates would be given random papers and, to discourage cheating, adjacent candidates will get different papers.

Engineering graduates protest against HCL Tech

Posted by sarath On 11:23 AM

Engineering graduates who were made hiring offers in 2011 by India's fourth largest IT company HCL Technologies protested before the company's offices across Bangalore, Pune, Hyderabad, Chennai, Kolkata and Noida on Monday saying that they had no clarity on when they could join. This is the second such protest in a week.

The students got their engineering degrees in June last year. But they say they haven't heard from the company on the formal joining date as yet. "I have taken a loan of Rs 3.25 lakh. The bank is pressurizing me to start paying up my EMIs," said an engineering student who did not want to be named.

A statement from HCL Technologies said, "We remain committed to have each individual with letters of intent from HCL join us. We have also shared that we will start communicating the dates of joining in August 2013 or even earlier, for positions across our lines of business ."

Some IT companies are unwilling yet to admit it publicly, but uncertainties about IT demand in the wake of the global slowdown are compelling them to stagger their fresher joining dates over a much longer period than is normal. Infosys had deferred joining dates of the 2012 batch by three months. The company said they would complete the on-boarding of candidates in the April-June quarter of the next financial year.

Long waits for joining are worrisome for candidates because they risk losing their 'fresher' tag and work experience . "I have not been able to pursue higher studies because HCL kept us busy with the Front Runner Program test," said another student.

For the first time HCL introduced a mandatory entrylevel online test for new hires called the Front Runner Program (FRP). The test, with 30 multiple option questions on programming languages, was held in September and was to determine which candidates would be on-boarded first. Students told TOI that only 1,300 out of the 6,000 who sat for the test cleared it.

Students were then informed that FRP would be conducted again on January 6 for those who had not cleared it. But that test was cancelled . Students who cleared the September test have not been on-boarded yet.

The HCL spokesperson said the company had immediate needs in its infrastructure services line of business . "Individuals are invited to consider these, and make a personal choice to start their career now or await a date of joining into another line of business (around August)," the company said.

Bosch strike ends; TE declares lockout

The employee union of Bosch Ltd, MICO Employee's Association (MEA), has called off its two-day 'tool down' strike post discussion with the Bosch management and additional labour commissioner on March 9.

On March 7, the MEA went on a 'tool down' strike protesting the suspension of a workman at the Bosch facility. The company had suspended the workman on the grounds of not meeting basic production requirements. "An agreement was reached on the working model for the new production line. Based on this, the suspension of one employee has been withdrawn. However the enquiry on the employee will continue," said Bosch.

Meanwhile, TE Connectivity India declared a lockout at two of its factories in Bangalore. "A large number of workers have been unlawfully staying inside the factory for the last two days. This has created a situation which is not safe for them and other employees and equipment in the factory," the company said.
